And on to 21 months

I am obviously a little behind on these posts, as it appears that Conley just turned 20 months a couple weeks ago. ;) And he actually turned 21 months a couple weeks ago, on September 21. But here goes.

Another fun month and the start of Conley's second Longhorn football season. Unfortunately, he has yet to see a successful team in his short life - but it doesn't seem to bother him in the least. Conley enjoyed his first two home football games of the season and was very enthusiastic with his cheering - lots of clapping and "yays" (sometimes for the wrong team ;) ). He has continued his love affair with his play kitchen, enjoyed quite a few kiddie-size smoothies with Dad, hitched a few rides in his new red wagon, continued his role as a little bookworm (patting the floor next to him is your cue to sit down and read!), and danced up a storm with the ladies at Justin and Ashlee's wedding.

The big "2" is looming...I think I might be dreading it a little bit. It just seems so old! For a few more short months, I can still count your age in months and call you my baby - but soon enough that won't be the case and you will be 2.

20 months!

What a big boy! Conley really has turned into a little man this month - I feel like he has become so independent and busy (which isn't completely new), but still has a soft spot for me at the end of the day. :) He is talking more and more (agua, baila, ollie, mommy and daddy are the favorites), repeating words we say, mimicking what we do more and more, continuing to be such a good little helper, and is asserting his independence a lot more. He's even got a full head of hair and a mouth full of teeth!

By the way - Conley turned 20 months in August, so this post is a little late! ;)

A new favorite

I love trying out new restaurants, but that doesn't happen quite as often as it used to with a toddler in tow. We try to work it in though by visiting during off hours and one place that has been on my radar for awhile now is epicerie. I'd read great things about it through different food blogs and heard about some delicious chocolate chip cookies, and I'm happy to report that it did not disappoint. Peter, Conley and I visited on a Wednesday night before 6 and it wasn't too crowded - which actually can sometimes backfire because then any noise that Conley makes is more noticeable in a quiet restaurant. He managed to make friends with some of the other tables and some of the staff, so we were ok on that front this time. I wish I had taken some pictures of our food but we were both busy entertaining a one year old so that didn't happen - we had the fried green tomatoes and the fried gouda to start and I really enjoyed them both. The tomatoes also included various pickled veggies which I love. Peter had the tri-tip steak with amazing thin crispy fries and aioli  and I had the chicken terrine with squash and potatoes. Both were very good but I might try something different the next visit.

Amazing cookie desserts - I have been thinking an homage to the best cookies in Austin (similar to my NYC reviews) is due soon and epicerie will definitely make the list. Their chocolate chip cookies are like thick mounds of cookie and remind me of my absolute favorite in NYC - Levain Bakery. The shortbread was also delicious - may even be the best I have had ever! I did snap a picture at home of the two cookies along with my nightly dark chocolate chunks - that was a good nightcap! They also have a nice selection of wine and lots of cute little foodie gifts - chocolates, sea salt, maple syrup and so on that I will have to linger over longer when I don't have Conley with me. All of this in the cutest little craftsman-style house with the creaky wood floors that I dream of  - a perfect setting for a nice little neighborhood joint on the fringes of Rosedale. Coincidentally, it's a block away from a house that we had put in an offer on before we bought ours and also next door to one of the preschools Conley is on the list for. We will definitely be back - and epicerie will definitely be added to my weekly rounds to various cookie joints!

Ciao Italia!

We've been back over three months now but still have lots of great memories from Italy! The weather was beautiful - and even a little cool for our beach days. Conley made friends with lots of admirers every day. He was greeted with smiles,  "ciao bella" (should it have been bello?) and was also called "piccolo," which is the word for small that I used quite often when ordering gelatos. I think it has a cute ring to it as a nickname for Conley. Many Italians seemed to think his name was Connie - so that has stuck for us even now that we're back. Our itinerary was slowed down a bit with a baby in tow, but he really was a great little traveller and enjoyed his stroller and backpack rides through the cities and running around in piazzas chasing pigeons. We became experts at navigating his jogging stroller up and down stairs and through tiny streets and most meals were enjoyed with a bottle of chianti while Conley napped. First trip abroad was a success!

First stop was Venice for two nights - the first day was pretty tiring with a 7 hour layover in NYC, 9 hour flight to Venice and then a one hour boat ride from the airport, but we still tried to pack a few things in to that first day since our time here was short.

After a quick nap, we were off to explore Venice!

Next stop was Florence for four nights and I think this was my favorite stop, plus it was nice to have a longer stay to get settled and really explore. Our hotel was great (Residenza Il Villino, I highly recommend it!) - the owners were so sweet, our room was really spacious and it was on the first floor so we could just wheel Conley in every night after dinner. We also did a daytrip to Tuscany with four 50-something couples who were very sweet considering a i year old was on board for their tour of Tuscany. We stopped in San Gimignano (my favorite!), Monteriggione, and Siena and also had a wonderful visit at the Sovestro in Poggio wine estate. It is run by the cutest Italian couple with two young children (the wife was actually very pregnant during our visit) and we got a very enthusiastic tour of the grounds, a thorough education on chianti and olive oil and a delicious lunch of ribollita, bread, olive oil, local honey, olives, meats, cheeses, biscotti and of course wine! We even had some wine and olive oil shipped home! We would love to go back one day and stay there!

On the (rail)road again and this time our destination was Vernazza in the Cinque Terre with a pitstop en route in Pisa. It was a nice change of pace to have two nights on the coast, although the weather was the coolest we had and very windy too! It was very beautiful though - I loved Vernazza and you could walk up and down the main street in about 5 minutes. The coastline was rocky so not great for baby beach-goers, but very scenic. The second day we ventured to two of the other villages - Riomaggiore and the biggest of the five, Monterosso, where we found some sand for Conley. It was a wonderful way to spend two nights and gave us time to just explore, enjoy the villages and the water, and not have a list of sites to check off our list.

Good-bye to the Cinque Terre

Last stop - Roma! We had 3 nights in our final destination, so after our four hour train ride from Vernazza, we really tried to pack it in to those last few days. We didn't get to see it all, but we did a lot and we actually had the warmest weather of the trip on this last leg (but still beautiful compared to Texas summers!) 

We had a great trip - ate tons of pasta and bruschetta, drank lots of wine, ended every night with gelato and saw so many beautiful places! Conley was the perfect little traveller - he gained two new nicknames, charmed locals and travelers alike, and got his first stamp (of many to come) in his passport. We miss it already! Grazie Italia!
